The Isles of Scilly are a unique part of Britain, located 28 miles from the Cornish mainland, the islands offer a relaxed, laid back atmosphere and simply stunning surroundings in which to enjoy some time away from the real world. Made up of over 100 rocks and islands the total population of around 2100 inhabit 5 of the islands which are famous for their white sandy beaches and turquoise seas.
St Mary's
The biggest and main island is St Mary's with a population of 1700, it measures 2 miles by 2 miles with just 9 miles of road. The main centre is Hugh Town, originally built on a sandbar. Here you can find shops, pubs, hotels and restaurants. There is one cash machine, a Post office and a supermarket.
There are numerous white sandy beaches around St Mary's and popular walks include around the fortified, historic Garrison, over to the small settlement of Old Town with it's picturesque bay and church, out to Peninnis lighthouse, around the coast or inland accross one of the many nature trails or go in search of rare birds that often frequent the countryside.
From the quay in Hugh Town, you can take one of the many tripper boats that operate during the main season to one of the inhabited off islands or you can go in search of seals, puffins and seabirds around the numerous rocky outcrops or the famous Bishop Rock Lighthouse, the last piece of the UK before America, 6 miles to the South West.
Activities to do include walking, bird watching, boating, sailing, exploring off islands, fishing, horse riding, cycling, golf, following the colourful gig rowing races, watching the summer cricket matches, a visit to the museum or local art galleries and much more.
If the pace of life on St Mary's isn't slow enough for you then it will be on St Agnes, Tresco, Bryher or St Martin's. With populations between 80 and 150, each island offers an unspoilt landscape each with its own distinct feel.
Each island is reachable by daily tripper boat and has a pub and shop. There are many secluded beaches and headlands within walking distance or explore the small settlements visitng galleries and sampling the local produce.
